Your requirements. One app. Your way.

Off-the-shelf software makes your business adapt to the software. Bespoke software adapts to your business.

I design and build focused applications for UK businesses - then support them after launch. Work is delivered remotely from Menston, West Yorkshire, for clients anywhere in the UK.

URBHQ is a product I built: a modular headquarters for quotes, jobs, bookings, stock and day-to-day operations. It shows the same approach I take on client projects - software shaped around real work, not a brochure mock-up.

  • Customer portals
  • Booking systems
  • Internal tools
  • Admin dashboards
  • Workflow automation
  • Reporting platforms
  • Stock management
  • API integrations

Businesses that have outgrown spreadsheets and generic tools

Bespoke applications suit owners and managers who know how their process should work, but keep fighting software that almost fits.

  • ✓
    Small and growing UK businesses
Teams that need a focused tool rather than a large enterprise suite.
  • ✓
    Service and operations firms
Quotes, jobs, bookings, stock or customer updates that currently live in email and spreadsheets.
  • ✓
    Businesses connecting people and systems
Customer portals, staff dashboards or reporting that pull together existing data.

When the process is the product

  • ✓
    Repeated manual work
Copying bookings, chasing status updates or rebuilding the same reports every week.
  • ✓
Tools that do not talk to each other
Customer, job or stock data stuck in separate systems with no reliable join.
  • ✓
    Off-the-shelf limits
You are bending the business to match a product’s workflows, fields or pricing tiers.
  • ✓
    Unclear customer or staff access
People need a simple portal instead of emailing files or calling for updates.

Typical applications I build

  • ✓
    Customer portals
Secure areas for quotes, job progress, documents or certificate access.
  • ✓
    Booking systems
Diaries and requests shaped around how you actually take work.
  • ✓
    Internal tools
Admin screens for teams who run operations day to day.
  • ✓
    Reporting and workflow automation
Dashboards, alerts and hand-offs that replace fragile spreadsheet routines.

When an existing product may be a better fit

I will say so if a well-supported product already covers your need at a sensible cost. Custom software is the right choice when your process is the advantage - not when you only need a standard CRM, accounting package or website form.

  • ✓
    Standard industry packages
If a proven product already matches 90% of the job, buying and configuring it is usually wiser.
  • ✓
    Brochure or simple enquiry needs
Those belong on a website project, not a bespoke application.
  • ✓
    Unclear ownership of the process
If nobody can describe how work should run, we fix that in discovery before writing code.

From discovery through to support

Six clear stages. You always know what we are building and what happens next.

Discovery

We walk through the problem, users, data and constraints - no technical brief required to start.

Scope

You get a written scope: features, assumptions, integrations, timescale and price before build work begins.

Development

The application is built in stages with working reviews so you can steer early rather than at the end.

Review

We test real scenarios with you, fix gaps and agree what “ready for launch” means.

Launch

Hosting, access, domains and go-live steps are handled; training or walkthroughs are included as agreed in scope.

Support

Optional ongoing help for fixes, small changes and advice as the business evolves.

How integrations are assessed

Connections to email, calendars, accounting tools, CRMs or your own databases are reviewed before they go into scope.

  • ✓
    Access and documentation
We check whether a usable API or export exists and who can grant credentials.
  • ✓
    Data quality
Messy or incomplete source data is called out early - it affects design more than code style.
  • ✓
    Risk and fallbacks
If a third-party link is fragile, we plan a graceful fallback rather than promising a perfect sync.

Agreed in writing before build starts

Every project gets a written proposal covering what is included, what is out of scope, the delivery approach and the price. Work starts only after you accept that proposal. Timescales follow the agreed scope and how quickly feedback comes back from your side.

  • ✓
    Fixed or staged pricing
Chosen to match the clarity of the brief - always written up front, not left open-ended.
  • ✓
    Change control
New features after scope is agreed are priced and scheduled separately so the original plan stays honest.
  • ✓
    No published rate card here
Application work varies too widely for a single public price. Use the contact form and I will outline options after we talk.

You should not be locked into mystery software

At launch you receive a clear handover of how the application is hosted and accessed. Domains registered in your name stay yours. Ongoing support is optional - if you later want another provider to take hosting, we plan that as a separate handover rather than trapping you in an unnamed black box.

  • ✓
    Working software, not a demo
You get the live application and the practical details needed to keep using it.
  • ✓
    Support stays optional
Monthly or ad-hoc care can cover fixes and small enhancements when you want them.
  • ✓
    Honest limits
Detailed source-code ownership, escrow or licensing wording is agreed in the project proposal when relevant - ask if that matters for your board or insurers.

URBHQ - what it demonstrates

URBHQ is a live modular business HQ I designed and developed. It is not a client brochure site - it is working software that shows how I approach operations tools.

Common questions about bespoke apps

What does bespoke application development involve?

We agree what the software must do, who will use it and how it fits your existing tools. I then design, build and review the application in stages, launch it with you, and can support it afterwards. You do not need a finished technical specification to start - a clear description of the problem is enough for the first conversation.

Can you improve or connect existing systems?

Yes, where it is practical. Many projects extend or connect tools you already use - for example adding a customer portal, automating a spreadsheet-heavy process, or linking booking and job data. Integrations are assessed case by case against the APIs, data quality and access you can provide.

Do I need a technical specification?

No. Explain the business problem, who is involved and what a good outcome looks like. I turn that into a written scope before build work starts. If you already have notes, wireframes or process documents, those help, but they are not required to begin.

How are costs and delivery dates agreed?

After discovery I provide a written scope covering features, assumptions, timescale and price - fixed or staged depending on the project. Build work starts only once you are happy with that proposal. Dates depend on scope clarity and how quickly decisions and content come back from your side.

What happens after launch?

You receive a working application and a clear handover of how it is hosted and maintained. Ongoing support is optional - for example fixes, small enhancements and advice as the business changes. Terms for support are agreed separately when you want them.
